Tonight’s fundraiser, “Masters, Music & Community†is in support of Throckmorton’s free community programs. Please join us for a special reception of Indian delicacies followed by a concert performance by two musical masters Steve Oda on sarode and Michael Lewis on tabla. All proceeds from the evening will benefit and support the continuation of our free community programs including Sunday Sessions and Noon Concerts.
ABOUT THE MUSICIANS
Steve Oda began his musical education at the age of seven, learning to play slide guitar and then jazz guitar. His love of creativity through musical expression led him to the classical music of North India and the sarode. His practice started earnestly with Ustad Aashish Khan in 1971, and then in 1973 he became a disciple of Aashish’s father, the legendary musician, Maestro Ali Akbar Khan, one of India’s treasures. Since then Steve has dedicated himself to fully learning this complex art form and to carry on the teachings of his illustrious guru. In 1996, he received a prestigious Canada Council Artist’s Grant to pursue intensive studies at an advanced level with Ali Akbar Khan.
Michael Lewis is one of the finest American tabla players today. A disciple of the late Ustad Allah Rahka, and long time student of Ustad Zakir Hussain, he has accompanied many Indian classical artists, including Ustad Zakir Hussain as a member of the Rhythm Experience, Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Krishna Bhatt and Partho Chatterjee. Very popular in the Bay Area classical music scene, Michael is widely appreciated by artists for his lyrical style and sensitive accompaniments.
