Frederic Rzewski The People United Will Never Be Defeated (for piano solo)
Frederic Rzewski’s monumental masterpiece from 1975 is based on Sergio Ortega’s "¡El pueblo unido jamás será vencido!”. It was written as a commission for the 1976 bicentennial of the United States and alludes to the situation at the time of the Chilean people under the repressive dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. Rzewski also connects his hour-long piece with earlier leftist political struggles by quoting “Bandiera Rossa” and Hanns Eisler’s “Solidarity Song”
