this body public, the Mills College MFA in Book Art and Creative Writing Thesis Exhibition, opens at Johansson Projects on Friday, March 21st. The exhibited work is the result of five semesters of studio art practice intertwined with creative writing workshops and study of artist book traditions.
Jess Marks-Gale and Emji Spero explore the structures formed between bodies in relation, between the commons and the home, the event and the everyday. This is an attempt to map intangible sites of intersection, the boundaries of porous bodies in the moment of encounter and this space that betweens us.
The exhibition features work that invites the gallery visitor to collaborate with the artists, while showcasing the various methods in which the artists are working with the book form: installation, one-of-a-kind artist books, trade editions of poetic work, and letterpress printing.
