August 21, 2014
5–8 PM
Admission is $5 after 5 PM (free to members)
John Chiara is known for his unique photographic process obtained through the use of a room-sized camera obscura of his own design. To create an image, Chiara tows a trailer carrying the device—too big to move on its own—into position, climbs inside it through a makeshift tube, and then takes the better part of a day to frame and focus each shot. Chiara will demonstrate the camera he uses to make his work, including the photograph Fort Barry at Bonita Point (right) (2011), which is on view in the exhibition Initial Public Offering: New Works from SJMA’s Collection.
