Blue Note recording artist Ambrose Akinmusire is one of the top trumpeters on the scene today. Winner of the 2007 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition and 2007 Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Solo Competition, Akinmusire has proved himself one of the most vital and deft musicians of his generation. He was named 2012 Trumpet Player of the Year in DownBeat Magazine’s Critics Poll and the Jazz Journalists Association Awards, and was awarded Germany’s ECHO Award as Instrumentalist of the Year. His most recent recording, When the Heart Emerges Glistening (Blue Note), topped critics’ lists at the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and Allmusic.com, and earned Akinmusire France’s Grand Prix l’Academie du Jazz. https://www.ambroseakinmusire.com

Kansas City jazz and blues vocalist Lisa Henry is a combination of swingin’ cool and down home class. She was a winner in the 1994 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocals Competition and was later named an International Jazz Ambassador to Africa. Since then, Henry has toured the globe, performing with such artists as Kenny Barron, Gerald Clayton, Kenny Garrett, Herbie Hancock, Roy Hargrove, Antonio Hart, Ingrid Jensen, Kevin Mahogany, Christian McBride, TS Monk, Lou Rawls, Wayne Shorter, Terell Stafford, Clark Terry, and Bobby Watson. Her latest recording, Live from 18th and Vine, has received critical acclaim.

The Thelonious Monk Institute National Performing Arts High School All-Star Jazz Sextet comprises six of the most gifted young musicians in the country. Sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, they are currently on tour presening “peer-to-peer jazz informances” in high school across the nation, teaching their peers not only about jazz but also about the deeply held American values it represents: teamwork, unity with ethnic diversity, democracy, and the vital importance of really listening to one another. The 2014 edition of the Sextet includes saxophonist Aaron Shaw (Los Angeles), trombonist Jeffery Miller (New Orleans), guitarist Jeremy Dorsey (Houston), pianist Frenchesca Romero (Miami), bassist Cole Davis (New York), and drummer Adrian Cota (Los Angeles).
