The Third Mind: An Art Show Featuring 5 Bay Area Collectives
“GYSIN: It says that when you put two minds together. . .
BURROUGHS: . . . there is always a third mind ...
GYSIN : . . . a third and superior mind . . .
BURROUGHS: ... as an unseen collaborator.”
The theory of the Third Mind suggests that an unexpected and visionary 'other mind' emerges as a result of collaboration. The Third Mind connects and reconstructs the imagery, imagination, intellect and purpose of the collaborators such that a singular, higher consciousness forms. To celebrate the experiments of Brion Gysin and William S. Burroughs, Big Umbrella Studios will bring together the work of artists from 5 local Bay Area collectives.
Bringing artists together in a collaborative spirit, we hope to bridge new ideas, form unusual associations, break down and rebuild considerations of art, language, and expression. On Friday, May 10, from 7-11 pm, we invite you to contribute to the Third Mind. The show will also be previewed on Thursday, May 9, from 5-11pm, during the Divisadero Art Walk.

In addition to our exhibition of local Bay Area artists, we will host a variety of collaborative activities and projects during the show. Individuals can creatively engage with others through Exquisite Corpse, a Surrealist parlor game favored by Andre Breton and Marcel Duchamp. We will also have an area where guests can experiment with the cut-up technique of literature, a process first envisioned by the Dadaists and later cultivated by William S. Burroughs and Brion Gysin.
