Originally from Santa Cruz, saxophonist Smith Dobson V is a member of an important jazz family. His father, the late Smith Dobson IV, was a world renown pianist whom accompanied jazz legends like Art Pepper, Stan Getz and Chet Baker, to name a few. Also in the family, Mother Gail, and Sister Sasha are both professional jazz vocalists. The family often performed as a group at many local venues, as well as many local schools and workshops. Dobson moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1997 and has performed over the past 20 years at the San Jose, San Francisco and Monterey Jazz Festivals, the SF Jazz Center, Kuumbwa Jazz Center, Yoshi’s, Great American Music Hall, the California Jazz Conservatory, the Stanford Jazz Workshop, and Club Deluxe. He has also performed in Berlin and Paris.
Dobson has had the honor of working with jazz legends like Bobby Hutcherson, Red Rodney, John Handy, Sheila Jordan, Red Holloway, Pete and Conte Condoli, Phillip Harper, Ben Goldberg, and Dayna Stephens. His most recent album is “Soul Of Wood”. The album pays homage to some of Dobson’s saxophone heroes such as Lester Young, Stan Getz and Warne Marsh.
