There’s nothing like some rockin' guitar licks, driving beats and catchy hooks--and San Jose quartet the Shrews have all these in spades. But that's not all. The Shrews demonstrate quite a bit of subtlety. It falls in category of post-punk, power-pop, New Wave--something like the Cars meets the Pixies meets Weezer. As infectious as lead singer Anthony Gullicksen's melodies are, there is a little bit of sadness and melancholy in his delivery, giving it some depth. The band formed only earlier this year and already have an excellent EP under their belts, as well as a music video in the works. (Aaron Carnes)
