The Seshen @ Cornerstone w/ LoCura, Space Captain, DJ Dream Queen

SEE EVENT DETAILS
The Seshen is a San Francisco Bay Area-based six-piece led by singer/lyricist Lalin St. Juste and bassist/producer Akiyoshi Ehara. Their forward-thinking sound combines synthesizers, drum machines, live percussion, and entrancing harmonies to create an unmistakable fusion of R&B, synth-pop, and electronic music. St. Juste and Ehara are joined by four remarkable bandmates to create their multidimensional music: drummer Chris Thalmann, keyboard/synth player Mahesh Rao, percussionist Mirza Kopelman, and sampler Kumar Butler. They take inspiration from across the musical spectrum; their individual influences range from recognizable artists (Erykah Badu, Jai Paul, James Blake, Radiohead, and Broadcast) to genres and eras that don’t initially appear to fit together (hip hop, indie rock, early electronica, and 70’s dub). Their unique alchemy of seemingly disparate sounds has led fans and critics alike to describe the band as defying categorization.

The Seshen’s latest release, Flames & Figures (October 14, 2016 – Tru Thoughts), was two years in the making and marks an evolution in their distinctive sound. Narrated by St. Juste’s lyrical stream of consciousness, Flames & Figures explores themes of femininity, power, illusion, and loss, as she draws on both her personal experiences and the world of her imagination.

The band remains in high demand, supporting live shows with the likes of Hiatus Kaiyote, tUnE-yArDs, Thundercat, Petite Noir and many more. They will be touring extensively in both the U.S. and Europe in 2017 after recently signing with booking agency 13 Artists (Tame Impala, Alabama Shakes, Portishead).

Locura
CALIFAS MESTIZO MUSIC: In Spain, the expression "Ida y Vuelta" is used to describe certain styles within Flamenco that made a "round-trip" from Spain to Latin America, mixing with music from the African and Indigenous populations. With this idea of music traveling and music as creative resistance, LoCura takes the trip back again mixing it up with their own Califas Flamenkito, Reggae, and Cuban Son styles. Moved by the music that crosses borders and takes root in different lands, LoCura draws from this creative 'rebelde' spirit to cultivate the cures passed on from our ancestors.

Space Captain
Space Captain is a Brooklyn based psych-soul group signed to UK indie label Tru Thoughts and includes members Maralisa Simmons-Cook (vocalist/lyricist), Alex Pyle (bass and production), Gray Hall (guitar and production), Mike Haldeman (guitar), Joey Ziegler (drums), Joy Morales (keyboard) and Lessie Vonner (trumpet). They have appeared with BADBADNOTGOOD, Ghostface Killah, Khruangbin, Palehound, Kendra Morris and more. Lauren Laverne of BBC Radio 6 Music calls them "really interesting...a sound of their own."
Their initial release, Easier / Remedy, a double A-side reissue of two early tracks, received heavy play from Don Letts (BBC 6Music) and new music guru John Kennedy on his XFM X-posure show. In a period of open-minded experimentation via live shows and studio jams, Space Captain have alighted on a progressive fusion of R&B and psychedelic rock with tentacles spinning out into soul, hip hop, electronica and noise. The In Memory EP finds singer/lyricist Maralisa Simmons-Cook exploring darker, more personal subjects with themes of mourning, the life cycle, lightness verses darkness, death and rebirth. In Memory has since seen notable play on Spotify's Fresh Finds Playlist, BBC Radio 6 Music and Bandcamp Weekly. Michael Gonzales (The Wire) wrote, "Space Captain's embrace of beauty is obvious. But it's nice to know they can get ugly when they want to."

Their new singles “Sycamore” and “Blue” bring an eagerly awaited taste of new music and an upfront glimpse of their debut album, All Flowers In Time (October 27). On this new material Space Captain channel seemingly disparate genres into a stirring, progressive proposition laced with stealthily addictive hooks. Keep an eye out for upcoming November and December tour dates, and pre-order All Flowers In Time here: spacecaptainofficial.bandcamp.com
