Celebrating its 40th anniversary, The San Francisco Marathon (TSFM) gears up for the biggest event in its history. This year, TSFM had a record early sell out, and will feature the largest group of runners in the race’s history. On Sunday, July 23, 27,500 local and visiting runners will run courses featuring the city’s iconic landmarks and neighborhoods.
Runners will take part in one of the five TSFM races: full marathon, two half-marathons, a 5K and an ultramarathon, one of the country’s few extended distance races with an urban course. Race day will bring runners from the Bay Area, all 50 states and 79 countries.
"We’re thrilled to celebrate The San Francisco Marathon's 40th anniversary," said Michelle LaFrance, Vice President of TSFM. “We have come a long way since 1977 when just over 900 runners crossed our first-ever finish line in Golden Gate Park. We are proud to have grown into one of the world’s most beautiful races, which allows runners from all walks of life and all corners of the globe to race each iconic mile in San Francisco.”
In celebration of the 40th anniversary:
40 for 40 Challenge: More than 5,000 returning TSFM runners are receiving a one-time-only historic anniversary challenge medal once they finish a cumulative 40 miles at TSFM 2017.
40 in 40 Distinction: Ultramarathon runners will each be receiving an exclusive medal honoring their completion of more than 40 miles during TSFM’s 40th Anniversary race.
Honoree runners: There are honoree runners racing the 40th Anniversary that range from runners who participated in the inaugural running of The San Francisco Marathon in 1977, to inspirational runners completing impressive accomplishments, such as a runner who is completing TSFM as one of 52 marathons in 52 weeks. Inspirational runner stories and more information on the 40th Anniversary, and TSFM history can be discovered here: http://www.thesfmarathon.com/history/
New Finish Line Festival: In Justin Herman Plaza the Festival has a larger footprint in 2017. It is open to the public on race day from 8 AM to 12:30 PM. The festival will feature a redesigned beer garden, presented by Lagunitas, enhanced runner recovery areas and food/nutrition and fitness experiences for spectators and runners alike.
