“The Platters” have recorded nearly 400 songs, have sold over 80 million copies of those songs, and have performed throughout the world, winning many awards and an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990. The Platters, over the years, have appeared in 27 movies such as “Rock Around the Clock,” “Girl’s Town,” “Europe by Night,” and many more.
The original members consisted of Tony Williams, Zola Taylor, David Lynch, Paul Robi, and Herb Reed the founder of the group in 1954. Their first hit in 1955 on Mercury Records was ‘Only You’, followed by ‘Smoke Get in Your Eyes’, ‘My Prayer’, ‘The Great Pretender’ and ‘Magic Touch’ just to name a few.
While ‘The Platters’ have divided over the years’ members have come and gone. Some of the members formed their own groups. Paul Robi and Zola Taylor recruited, one of the most intense bass singers of this era Benjamin BJ. Mitchell who was fortunate to record ‘The Platters Greatest Hits’ along with Paul Robi and Zola Taylor. For over forty years Benjamin Mitchell has maintained the pose, sound and perfection of the Platters with ‘The Platters Live’.
