4 Generations of historic Weston Photography

Back in the day Wildcat Hill was known as the “little house with the big mood”.
Edward Weston and his cronies spent many nights whopping it up; they shared meals, danced, read poetry and looked at each other’s work. All kinds of artists gathered together, Ansel Adams, Ruth Bernhard, Imogen Cunningham and Dorothea Lange, to name just a few.

Here is your opportunity to make your own memories and experience what they had. Come step back in time and imagine Edward Weston showing his photographs, then step into his original darkroom where he made some of his most famous prints. Hear the voice of Elliot Ruchowitz-Roberts and visualize Robinson Jeffers while he reads Jeffers poetry. Feel the connection of the two artists and feel the intimacy of the spirit that still lives at Wildcat Hill today!
This evening will be an exclusive bohemian night of food, photography, poetry reading, festivity and wine. Just like they used to do it in the old days. Come spend a magical evening with us and donate to a worthy cause!

Weston Scholarship (WS) is a non-profit organization established by Gina and Kim Weston in 2004 to support high school and college students studying fine art photography in Monterey County; specifically the conventional analogue processes (wet darkroom).

WS hosts an annual portfolio competition for students across the Monterey County including Carmel High School, Monterey High, Pacific Grove High, Santa Catalina, Seaside High, Stevenson Upper School, Hartnell College and Monterey Peninsula College. Students create a portfolio of 10 photographs based on a central theme in a professional presentation that is professionally judged through WS. The competition culminates in an annual exhibition and awards ceremony at The Marjorie Evans Gallery at The Sunset Center in Carmel. This year’s awards ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday May 7, 2014, 6-7PM. The exhibition runs from May 1-31, 2014.

WS celebrates the roots of photographic history in our region and keeps a tradition alive that was established by Edward Weston and Ansel Adams. Kim Weston is a third generation fine art photographer working in Monterey County with the same sensitivity and dedication to excellence as his grandfather Edward, his uncle Brett, and father Cole.

WS provides ongoing support during the year to teachers and students with classroom presentations, mentorship, and tours of Wildcat Hill – the renowned home and studio of Edward Weston; and donations of photographic supplies to schools in need with co-sponsor Freestyle Photographic Supplies.
