Over four nights, UnderCover Presents pays tribute to two legendary artists, one landmark album, and a seminal studio band. Each unique night showcases four different Bay Area ensembles as they present bold reinterpretations of this iconic music.
As a singer, songwriter, pianist, arranger, and civil rights activist, Simone left a poignant and highly personal mark on American music of the twentieth century. Combining jazz with gospel, classical, and pop influences, the “High Priestess of Soul” recorded over forty albums, mostly between 1958 and 1974. A carefully curated selection of her recordings are lovingly and wildly re-cast by Jazz Mafia’s experimental Realistic Orchestra, prog-pop-fusion virtuosos MoeTar, Zakiya Harris & Sólás Burke-Lalgee of Oakland-based Afro-eclectic soul ensemble Elephantine, and Oakland School for the Arts’ four-time national champion a cappella group, Vocal Rush.
