Barefoot Chamber Concerts ("an enterprise noted for both its quality and informality" - San Francisco Classical Voice) presents really good music in the right acoustic and without the formality of most classical music events.
In their first concert of the new year, Barefoot is very happy to present the Bay Area's own merry band of viols, the iconic Barefoot All-Stars, who bring you a program to delight both the casual listener and the 17th-century music nerd: a whole program of music by Alfonso Ferrabosco II. The composer was so famous during his life that Roger North, the next generation's most prolific writer on music, called him "the most famous man in all the world" for his fantasies.
Though not so much a household name in the twentieth century, Ferrabosco's career straddled the Elizabethan, Jacobean, and Caroline courts and he created unequalled works. His amazing (and fully chromatic) hexachord fantasies are simply way ahead of their time, and his many gorgeous 5 part pavans, including the famous "Dovehouse Pavan," "Sharp Pavan," and "Four Note Pavan," set the standard for harmonic richness that only Lawes came to equal.
This concert will feature all these celebrated works, together with other fantasies and dances. All this in the fabulous wooden acoustic of the Hillside Swedenborgian Church.
There will, of course, be snax. Don't miss this unique occasion!
