Waffle Opera is an exciting new opera company founded and run by several San Francisco Conservatory of Music alum. Following the success of their past productions, Waffle Opera is embarking on a dazzling new production of Mozart's The Magic Flute. This will be the beloved classic as you have never seen it before, stripped to its bare essentials and explored in fresh and exciting ways. This production takes everything you thought you knew about the opera and jettisons it, with a focus on low-tech, theatrical magic. The dialogue is brand new English by director Ted Zoldan, written to explore and understand the often simplified people who inhabit this fantastic world. This production takes inspirations not only from opera but from Story theater, dance theater, communal storytelling, mime, and the Muppets (just a little). When the audience enters, they may see little more than a Ladder, a few ropes, a couple of sticks, a few pieces of cloth and a dozen or so singers, but actually, they're seeing the world of The Magic Flute.
