THE KEVIN CONNESS BAND, Funky Spuds, The Mars Express

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Based in San Francisco, the Kevin Conness Band, formed in 2016, is comprised of experienced musicians inspired by each other and their shared drive to put soulful original music out into the world.

Kevin Conness fronts the band with lead vocals and guitar, joined by Jason Braatz (bass and vox), Charlie Giesige (drums), Julien Kent (keys), and Kelyn Crapp (lead guitar).

With plans to put out their first E.P. later this year and charged with a diversity of sounds, their performances feel familiar, like catching the sound of a groovy daytime walk through the park. The lyrics, however, often touch on a different note.
A couple of years ago, Conness was in a long boarding accident that almost took his life. But coming so close to death gave him a sense of urgency, and after over ten years of playing music in other groups, it was time to take the reins, put a group together, and focus on writing/producing.

A lot of the songs are about relationships. Others are about the complexities of life—especially what it is like to recognize the fragility of time. But all of the compositions draw from real experiences and speak to the audience in a straightforward way through soulful, down-tempo songs, combining a variety of styles, including rock, soul, jazz, funk and hiphop—not surprising the band is made up entirely of music majors.
They also often have special guests sharing the stage with them at Pop’s Bar, where they play every first Saturday from 7-9pm.

Funky Spuds is home to some of the Bay Area’s best multi-instrumentalist and multi-genre talent. Collectively they have played with Levon Helm, Bob Dylan, Tommy Igoe, Jazz Mafia, and The Purple Ones, to name a few. Bandleader and founder, Shane Cox, creatively expands the traditional use of tuba using harmony, beatboxing, improvisation, and more. Saxophonist and guitarist Paul Branin fronts the band adding unique jazz and rock elements. Other featured members include some of the Bay Area's greatest up and coming musicians including Ian McArdle, Mike “Wolf” Quigg, and Alex Attard.

The Mars Express plays a blend of electric jazz, funk, and soul composed of expressive, in-the-pocket grooves, rich harmonic explorations, captivating vocals, creative improvisation and an electronic outer-space ambience.

Based in the San Francisco East Bay, singer Sara Remington, keyboardist Marcelino Quiroz, drummer Kris Jones and bassist Mike Toth create original music and adaptations of familiar tunes influenced by classic and neo-soul, R&B, jazz-funk, reggae, hip-hop, trip-hop, drum & bass, and acid-jazz. Consistent with the band's M.O. of bending genres and blending styles, special guests often join the musical conversation and make every performance a unique event.
