One of the most important punk-rock figures in the '80s was K Records founder and Beat Happening singer Calvin Johnson. Beat Happening may have had a goofy childlike quality about them, with very loose beats and primitive instrumentation, but when hostile punk-rockers challenged them at shows, which happened often, as the book Our Band Could Be Your Life attests, Johnson stood his ground, stared them down and ultimately earned their respect. K Records has released hundreds of weird, underground records in it 25-plus-year run (Including Beck's best album). Johnson's latest project, the Hive Dwellers, captures the offbeat, indie-folk sound of Beat Happening more so than his prior indie-funk project, Dub Narcotic Sound System.
