L.A. rockers the Goodnight have a bit of an unusual origin story. Two of the members started playing in Montana, released a record in Japan, toured the states extensively, then relocated to Los Angeles. There they met a third member, and later a fourth, who relocated from San Jose to be a part of the group. The foursome got together last year and found a sound somewhere between emo-punk and '70s lighter-swaying, arena-rock ballads. The songs are extremely heartfelt, lush and polished--filled with more harmonies than Styx or America ever tried to cram into their songs. Their recently released LP carries the title Owlbum and features a head-cocked Owl on the cover, which is strikingly at odds the earnest nature of their lyrics. Maybe don’t think about it too hard. This music is fun. (AC)
