Following the back-to-back release of "Zaireeka" and "The Soft Bulletin", "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" marked a bold new direction for the Oaklahoma City legends, exploring mesmerizing surround sound production, stranger narratives, and unabashed sonic creativity. This album seeks to capture the delicate duality of life and death, happiness and misery, love and heartbreak, and does so through an expansive soundfield.
Taking cues from their surround sound uppercut, "Zaireeka ", the album feels like an immersive sound ride. That immersion is indeed the band's ideal space for experiencing the music. It's pioneering, yet timeless production, that sounds like the technical offspring of "Pet Sounds" and "Sgt. Peppers" on more acid. If you listen deeply you may just hear Yoshimi fighting against the flat stereo world of the music industry.
