The Tortured

We are here to promote unity among the disenfranchised, and to make Punk Rock great again! However, we also right radiofriendly Punk/Pop songs that are melodic.

Lead singer/guitarist Johnny Lawrie met drummer Sam Gearing at an open mic at Bec's in Berkeley in early 2012. They started playing together as a two piece for the next couple of years as the Johnny Lawrie Band and the punk band Elegant Trash, another Berkeley Punk band. In 2014, the latest incarnation, The Tortured, was born. Lawrie developed his love of punk and skateboarding at the early age of 10 years old, introduced to accessible Pop-Punk staples like Green Day and Blink 182. Since then, Lawrie has truly lived the punk rock lifestyle. For half of 2013, like many Bay Area artists and musicians who got priced out of the skyrocketing new tech worker economy, he waved goodbye (or raised a stiff middle finger!) and - with only a backpack and his beloved guitar - hitchhiked up and down the Pacific Coast Highway, on a new nomadic adventure. Eventually, however, the wayfarer life got heavy, and he ended up homeless in LA. Yet, ever-the fighter, he still had the drive and courage to work at a local McDonald’s and play as many open mic and other live performances as he could to keep the spirit of the music in his blood pumping and his Punk dream alive. While the band has experienced a few line-up changes through the years, the current four-man lineup is perhaps at its most musically ambitious and visionary yet. Clearly skilled in their collective musicianship, the band also maintains the laid-back Everyman chill vibe one might expect from a Skate-Punk band. Messing around and chilling out are essentials as band practice. Music lovers at heart, the band’s combined musical influences include Rancid, Get Dead, Social Distortion, Radiohead, NOFX, and Alkaline Trio. Lyrically, the band’s messages are infused with the anger and disenfranchisement, often anti-establishment political messages against the greed and carelessness of our elected “leaders” and upper class. The band takes aim at those who are exploiting and instilling fear in the working class people of the U.S. to do their personal selfish bidding in order to make a profit – whether it be weapon manufacturers, oil companies or other insidious big business interests. In late Spring 2018 The Tortured released the standalone, standout single and professionally produced music video “She’s Gone”. The band is set to release its latest full-length album on October 31st!
