The Ever-Expressive Ruling Pen with Rick Paulus

SEE EVENT DETAILS
The ruling pen, once a rather static, technical tool used for drawing precise lines, has become one of the most expressive tools in the modern lettering artist’s arsenal. In this exciting, and somewhat inky, one-day workshop, master calligrapher Rick Paulus will gently introduce you to this dynamic tool and the methods required to make it speak in many voices.
Required Materials

Slant Board

Ink and/or writing fluids of your choice (watercolor, acrylic ink, gouache, etc). I generally encourage the use of color

Two sheets of textured paper (cold press watercolor, Canson MiTeintes, Arches Text Wove, etc)

Pad of Marker layout paper (11” X 14” minimum)

Ruler

Pencil

Ruling pens/Folding pens (optional—Rick will provide)

Small containers to hold/mix pigments and water.

Rick Paulus has been a calligrapher and a teacher for over forty years. Rick apprenticed for several years at the legendary Tolley Studios, in Washington, DC, before becoming the engrosser for the US State Department. In 1998, he was appointed chief calligrapher of the White House, where he remained for two presidents. Today, in addition to enjoying calligraphic explorations from his studio nestled in the coastal hills of Sonoma County, Rick is dedicated to sharing the knowledge gained through many years of studio production and experimentation to students young and old alike
