On December 12th and 13th, RAWdance will present the 16th installation of the CONCEPT series, a celebrated, cozy showcase of contemporary dance. The CONCEPT series: 16 returns to the Joe Goode Annex, an industrial performance venue with an intimate vibe, serving up some of the Bay Area’s most compelling choreographic voices in a convivial and informal setting. The series promises to fulfill your cravings for quality dance art while keeping your belly full of popcorn.
The CONCEPT series: 16 presents an electric lineup of top-notch creative talent. KT Nelson, with collaborative dancers Vanessa Thiessen and Dudley Flores, presents “reframe”, reconstructing a work originally commissioned by Nicole Paiement and the Blue Print Series at SF Conservatory of Music. Sharing excerpts from their recent premiere of beast, tinypistol, under the direction of Maurya Kerr, digs into the concept of the “anti-pretty”, dismantling conventional understandings of beauty by exalting the grace within the “ugly”. Recent Bay Area transplants Lauren Simpson and Jenny Stulberg strive to balance the strictly formal with the deeply personal as they perform a duet of sensory-driven physicality, simplicity, playfulness, and honesty. Katerina Wong presents a new work that acknowledges the value of language and storytelling, utilizing a mix of accompanying sounds, including a score of live vocal percussion with recorded folk music sung in endangered languages. Rounding out the program is GERALDCASELDANCE, a company whose work is meticulously constructed, emotionally charged, and rich with metaphor.
Host RAWdance revives a work from 2012 praised by Criticaldance: “Two by 24: Love on Loop had it all: an immersive experience, with deep narrative continuity, supported by sound technique and ground-breaking choreography.” Originally an 8-hr installation for 12 couples interpreting the same duet, RAWdance is reimagining the piece for the CONCEPT series. For this new version, pairings will share moments of the same duet, weaving in and out of a single narrative thread to again highlight universal themes of love and acceptance.
RAWdance was awarded a 2014 Goldie from the SF Bay Guardian, in large part in recognition of the vitality of the CONCEPT series. “An old-fashioned salon of serious fun but also serious art, the series has become one of the most congenial places to watch dance in SF.” Critical Dance chimed in on CONCEPT series: 14, “A packed house, cozy performance environment, engaging choreography, yummy snacks, genuine and inviting hosts… an evening of modern dance doesn’t get much better than this.” In 2012, SF Weekly named the CONCEPT series the “Best Way to Sample S.F.’s Contemporary Dance Scene.
The intimate salon is all about making dance accessible without sacrificing the art. Choreographers are encouraged to share work at any point along the creation process, from revisiting repertory to testing out a work-in-progress fresh from the studio. The series began in 2007 and has shared the work of 64 artists to date, in addition to RAWdance.

ABOUT RAWdance:
In 2004 after years of collaboration as dance partners and choreographers, Ryan T. Smith and Wendy Rein formed RAWdance with the mission to create driven, visceral works that reveal the essence of our relationships and identities. RAWdance crafts technically challenging dances balancing athletic movement with intellectual themes, and presents them in unexpected public spaces as well as the theater. SF Weekly dubbed the company’s work “edgy, sexy inventive fare designed to speak to audiences.” Criticaldance.com has described it as “experimental work done brilliantly.” RAWdance was recognized by the SF Bay Guardian with a 2014 GOLDIE award.
Now at the tail end of its 10th anniversary year, RAWdance has become one of the most active, community engaging dance companies in the Bay Area. Smith and Rein have created over two
dozen works for the company, including several evening-length pieces, and have been supported through residencies at Ucross, ODC Theater, Djerassi, CounterPULSE, and Jon Sims Center. The company was awarded a 2010 Choreographers in Mentorship Exchange (CHIME) award. RAWdance’s Co-Artistic Directors have been commissioned by multiple universities and high schools. The company has performed in China, Singapore, Chicago, Providence, St. Louis, DC, and NYC, as well as throughout the Bay Area. RAWdance's 2013 short dance film, since you went, has been screened at festivals in Asia, Europe, and the U.S.
Furthering efforts to inspire dialogue and engage the community, in 2007 the company launched the biannual CONCEPT series, an informal and intimate salon of contemporary dance. The series focuses on accessibility, and has showcased works by 64 of the city's most talented dance makers, in addition to RAWdance. The CONCEPT series, named “Best Way to Sample S.F.’s Contemporary Dance Scene” by SF Weekly, has introduced hundreds of newcomers to contemporary dance.
