The City Reawakens features new work by San Francisco painters Beryl Landau and Anthony Holdsworth, who visually chronicle the city as the dark cloud of lockdown is lifted and we reawaken to a changed world. While friends and notables figures have passed, and restaurants and theaters have disappeared, there is also new life emerging around town. Parklets have created an al fresco dining scene; paper piccado decorates 24th and Harrison Streets in the Mission; and everyone is excited to establish a new normal.
For his latest series, Anthony Holdsworth traversed the city, taking his portable studio to the Castro and North Beach -- even catching the eye of SF Chronicle's Native Son Carl Nolte -

Anthony Holdsworth was born in England and embarked on a painting career while working as Head of Outdoor Restoration for the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, Italy. He continued his studies at the Bournemouth College of Art in England, and then the San Francisco Art Institute. Originally a landscape artist influenced by the Bay Area Figurative Art movement, Holdsworth began painting plein air cityscapes near his Oakland studio. Eventually he made his way to San Francisco's Mission District. He has shown with major galleries through California and has been a recipient of the WESTAF-NEA fellowship. Holdsworth lives in San Francisco, and works both there and in Oakland.
Beryl Landau is a San Francisco-based artist who describes her work as "symbolic landscape". Her acrylic paintings depict geographical locations rendered in a manner that evokes feelings about them. Born in New York City, Landau moved to Santa Monica CA at the age of 15, then arrived in San Francisco in the 1960s to attain BFA and MFA degrees at the San Francisco Art Institute. Her teachers included Richard Diebenkorn, Elmer Bischoff, and Joan Brown. She lives and works in Bernal Heights.
