The Cakeland Fête Noir

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Heron Arts is excited to announce its upcoming solo exhibition of Bay to LA artist Scott Hove. Renowned for his local Oakland Cakeland installation, Hove recently relocated to Los Angeles where he has created immersive experiences for the LA Art Show and Banksy's Dismaland. His most recent 2016 exhibition at Break Bread in downtown Los Angeles featured a massive cake maze installation, receiving international press and over 30,000 attendees. His upcoming San Francisco exhibition will feature all new works ranging from decadent sculptural pieces to a site specific installation and new paintings. The opening reception is on Saturday, January 14th from 7-10pm and is free and open to the public. The exhibition will be open until February 7th, by appointment only.

The Cakeland Fête Noir is a contemplation on class and status for those on the top and for those the squeeze of survival. Using Hove’s signature lavish cake-decorated sculpture and installations, the show will appeal to the emotions and body with the masterful use of seductive and delicious looking simulated frosting and fruit, the illusion heightened with dozens of full-length mirrors and theatrical lighting. Following his continual reference to a perceived "light and dark" dualism, the beautiful spectacle will lead to chambers of fear and claustrophobia in the form of a "hell pit" and grand chandelier composed of massive cowbones. Also featured will be a large-scale video installation infinity chamber featuring natural dualistic forces, Break Bread (a 9,000 square foot installation and collaboration with Bakers' Son and Cirque du Soleil). Hove will create a series of wall hanging sculptures using a mix of iconic secret society imagery to elicit a mysterious narrative. At once beautiful and grotesque, the show and gallery will provide a peak beauty experience while embracing the spectacle of pure artifice.
