THE BRANKAS, Gloomsday, Double Skeleton, Bad Psychics

SEE EVENT DETAILS
The Brankas are a duo. The duo consists of Taylor McElroy & Theo Slavin.
We have played a show in a repurposed steel factory and someone smashed an upright piano with a sledgehammer. We also played a show in our friend Jack’s apartment and the drum set fell over and there was a piñata and Theo had to scream over everything because there was no microphone. On multiple occasions, people have tried to talk to Taylor while he is playing drums. It’s very friendly but also hard to respond to. Another time, we played in a tiny art gallery for 15 minutes, packed up everything in 5 minutes and were just hanging out when the cops showed up; nothing to see here. We’ve also played places that have real sound systems and stages, which is alright too. Playing “rock and roll” music is ultimately a good excuse to meet other people, go outside and maybe even make a friend. Anything else is just marketing talk.
Our new album "My Parkour Body Is The Paint And The World Is My Canvas. I Don't See Obstacles, I See Opportunities." was released on May 12th, 2017 and is available on the internet or in our merch tub at a show.

Gloomsday is a post punk, sludge-wave band out of San Diego. Catchy riffs and rhythmic heaviness that lends from post punk to garage rock to doom rock, with dark and stripped down pop sensibilities. from B-52s to Black sabbath, Bauhaus to beach boys. As a two piece outfit, this band pulls off a full sound that stands up to an array of standard rock bands. Members Justin Cota (guitar) and Lori Sokolowski (drums) blend their instruments well to deliver a unique yet familiar sound. Cota, using a baritone guitar accesses low end thump while able to create guitar sounds as well Using both a bass amp and guitar amp creating a two dimensional sound from one instrument. Sokolowski on drums is the stylistic glue maintaining bouncy, big beats with clever time changes, energetic waves of punch, and moody applications of space to let the songs grab you. Gloomsday has toured the Wast coast 5 times and released two full length albums and two eps. Currently working on a new album.

Double Skeleton is a grungey and sometimes shoegazey indie rock band from San Francisco, CA. Founding members Daniel Pierce and Vincent Flores met while both living on Florida’s space coast in Brevard County in 2011. Finding they had a common interest in post-harcore and sludge bands of the 80’s and early 90’s like The Jesus Lizard and Melvins, their friendship quickly turned into discussions of starting a band. They moved to the Bay Area about a year later and started writing music and playing in various groups. A few projects later they formed Double Skeleton. In early 2015 they were joined by guitarist Joe Putnam and bass player Francis Ray and recorded a five song demo that was released the following spring. The demo and shows that followed earned the band comparisons to bands like “Dinosaur Jr. and the aggression of something like Pegboy with a ballad-y approach to noise punk abrasiveness” [-MRR]. Francis eventually left the band, and Double Skeleton became a three-piece. Right away they went to work writing their first record. The resulting seven songs were recorded with Monte Vallier at his studio in San Francisco in the fall and winter of 2016. Titled “No World”, it was released as a mini-album on cassette in April 2017 by Conditions Records.

Bad Psychics is ashamed of their fiction, believing that art starts with the contradiction of the mass extinction of our collective diction. Which is, after all, quite an affliction. Members have done time in Bay Area bands like Murder Practice, mini and the Bear, Giggle Party, and Shark Jackson.
