JERRY LAWSON GRANT FOR CAREER DEVELOPMENT
The 2018 call for applications to the Jerry Lawson Grant for Career Development, presented by Xbox, is now open!
Gerald A. “Jerry” Lawson (1940-2011), one of the first African American engineers in the video game industry, was the inventor of the Channel-F gaming console. Released in November 1976 by Fairchild Semiconductor, the Channel-F was the world’s first gaming system to utilize swappable ROM cartridges with a console that featured a microprocessor, the Fairchild F8 CPU. Lawson’s invention set the standard for the gaming industry going forward and changed the business model for the monetization of the console and the cartridge as separate entities.
To honor Jerry Lawson's legacy, Xbox will present a career development grant to five (5) people who identify as black and/or of African descent. Ideal candidates are already involved in the industry in some way (e.g., students of game design; developers, artists, designers, or other roles at solo or indie studios; budding games journalists, bloggers, or streamers.) but are not yet fully connected to the networks and resources needed to fully break through. Preference will be given to applicants who do not work at a AAA studio and have not previously worked at one as a full-time employee for more than one year.
Winners will receive:

a pass to attend the Game Developers Conference + Summit in San Francisco, California, from March 19-23, 2018.
a ticket to the Blacks in Gaming Green Room event on Wednesday, March 21
a private meet-and-greet event with current members and leaders in the gaming industry

Costs for travel, expenses and accommodations are not included as part of the grant. Selected winners will need to arrange their own travel and accommodation to San Francisco.
The application deadline for this grant is January 21, 2018 at 11:59pm Pacific.
