A community-led large-scale art project for the playa: "I,Awake"
In 2018, Larry Harvey dreamed of a radically different man. It is with great honor and privilege that the I, Awake team continues to work collectively with the Burning Man community and beyond in making one of Larry’s visions a reality. Join us in this tribute that we hope will continue on for many years to come.
After a 1st successful hackathon in May, some great progress has been achieved and it’s now time to take it to the next level. During this 1st edition, we were pleased to welcome 30+ amazing hackers who worked hand in hand with the I,Awake team.

We know that humans and algorithms will merge in our lifetimes and with the theme of this year being “I,Robot”, we decided to bring people together for a 2nd hands-on 24-hour hackathon leading up to the extraordinary.
We are calling for technologists to share their resources, knowledge and help us execute our collective vision: Create an ever-evolving robot capable of connecting with us all, the Burning Man community.
The Birth of the Robot: 2nd Hackathon for Burning Man 2018
· Saturday, July 7th at noon: Opening
· Sunday, July 8th at noon: Closing
· Location: Burning Man Headquarters, San Francisco (!)
· 24-hour hack
· 50+ hackers
· Machine Learning, AI, ROS, Computer Vision, Implementation
· 5 technical gurus, experts in their fields, will be assisting the project
· Food & Beverages provided all the way
Challenge:
We want to unite Silicon Valley by bringing science, tech, and art together in order to establish the next Burning Man generation. Designing the best-integrated robot behavior using not only simulators and sensors but also AI will be the key success factor of this hack; all integrated into one place: ROS 'Robot Operating System'.
What ... or rather Why?
Community connects us all and our biggest asset is our community.
To be part of a life-changing experience which will be remembered forever
To collaborate with key players and leaders from the tech industry and beyond
To visualize the final result of our teamwork this summer on the playa
To pay a tribute to Larry Harvey’s last vision for the Burning Man Community
Who can hack?!
All are welcome, but we encourage Python, C experience, and full stack developers as to prototype visualizations and other wonderful models. Feel free to bring your own hardware, sensors, etc to add to the jam! This hack will be the second edition of a 3 steps adventure before the big start. Spend the weekend working on a life-changing project with other like-minded people to achieve the impossible.
