The Bernal Beat is born of Mission neighborhood block parties

SEE EVENT DETAILS
FEBRUARY 10, 2018

Straight outta the streets of San Francisco, The Bernal Beat is born of Mission neighborhood block parties, with flavors steeped in the musical melting pot of the Bay Area. Their distinctly latin grooves draw you in with undeniably funky hooks. And it's no wonder -- collectively, Jose Najera and his band have an unparalleled musical pedigree spanning the essential Bay Area music scenes over the past 50 years. Rooted in classic Latin grooves, you'll hear the band's jazz, funk, rock, blues, soul, reggae, hip-hop, psychedelic, African and zydeco experiences emerging at various times during a performance. And for this band, it's very real experience, not just influences. Jose has played with luminaries like Pete Escovedo, Etta James, Billy Cobham, Narada Michael Walden, Chaka Khan, Elvin Bishop, Merl Saunders, David Grisman, Carlos Santana, Jim McCracklin, Malo, El Chicano, The Rowan Brothers, Martin Fierro, and Zero. The band members have equally impressive credentials, playing with Sly & the Family Stone, Graham Central Station, and even a performance at Woodstock. But the real magic is in the band chemistry and compelling live performance.

Jose A. Najera is a local legendary saxophone & conga percussionist from Hobbs, New Mexico USA! He grew up playing music and baseball, and was scouted by the Cleveland Indians. However he went to War in Vietnam instead and did two tours in the Navy as a chef. After being stationed at Treasure Island in the late 1960's through the 1970's, he fell into the happening Latin Jazz scene in San Francisco. He played with Carlos Santana, Chaka Khan, Etta James, Sara Vaughn, George Duke, Bill Cortial, Babatunde Lee, Azteca, Unzamba, Zero, Thunder Bolt, Chuchito Valdes from Cuba, and currently plays with Harvey Mandel from Chicago. He started his own band called "Jose Najera & The Bernal Beat" from San Francisco's Bernal Heights in the 1980's. Jose and his wife Doris B. Ruiz still live on Mullen Ave. in Bernal heights, a thriving musical neighborhood. His son Eloy Cipriano Najera also known as Cipre (see-pree), is the piano vocalist in the band. Together they rock the nation and give back to the community!
