The Bay Area: An Intentional Gathering for Womyn of Color in the Arts

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Due to rising housing costs and displacement from gentrification, Black and Brown folk are disappearing from San Francisco. But Black and Brown womyn are still holding it down on the arts scene in The Bay guiding cultural institutions and shining in leadership roles. Let's revel in our accomplishments 'cause WE'RE STILL HERE.
Women of Color in the Arts (WOCA) is in the business of holding space for womyn of color and that's why we’re traveling to San Francisco (and across the country) with a purposeful vision of creating circles of fellowship for womyn arts leaders of color. These intentional community gathering serves to connect cultural workers and ignite dialogue around how womyn of color can collectively work to support one another.
Grounded in community, this gathering will be held on 8/22/19 at the SFAC Galleries, a 40+ year old contemporary art space powered by the San Francisco Arts Commission (SFAC), a city agency committed to integrating the arts into all aspects of city life. WOCA will listen to learn about the collective work already happening in The Bay Area, investigate how we can be of service to existing and evolving communities, and talk about how womyn can continue to stay connected both locally and nationally. We'll also have the opportunity for an intimate guided tour of SFAC Galleries' newest exhibition, side by side/in the world, which explores themes of sanctuary. This community gathering is hosted by WOCA members Cristina Ibarra, Events Manager, of Yerba Buena Gardens Festival, and Bhumi Patel, Artistic Director, of pateldanceworks.
PLEASE NOTE While we appreciate all authentic allies, we ask that this gathering space remain exclusively for those that self-identify as women of color.FAMILY FRIENDLY SPACEIn order to accommodate working mothers, this will be a family-friendly space.
