Sérgio and Odair Assad, guitars
Clarice Assad, piano, electric bass and vocals

-------

The Brazilian-born brothers Sergio and Odair Assad have long reigned as the world’s most revered classical guitar duo, but they have ranged far and wide beyond the Baroque transcriptions that established their preeminent reputation. They’ve delved into Django Reinhardt’s Gypsy swing with violin master Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, accompanied Yo-Yo Ma playing bossa nova, and investigated Latin American standards with reed maestro Paquito D’Rivera. But their latest project, Da Volta as Raizes, is a stylistic departure. The Assads explore the unexpected rhythmic currents connecting the eastern Mediterranean and Brazil through a captivating collaboration with Sergio’s daughter, acclaimed pianist/singer Clarice Assad, the extraordinary world-jazz percussionist Jamey Haddad, and the hypnotic Lebanese singer Christiane Karam. With Karam setting modern and ancient Lebanese texts to original compositions by Sergio and Clarice, the project is an unprecedented voyage to the Middle East via the sensuous grooves of South America.

---------

Assad Family quintet exploring beautiful folk and pop music written by Brazil's iconic composers & more.

The brothers Assad first introduced three generations of The Assad Family to North America in 2004. The tour climaxed in a remarkable concert in the Temple of Dendur at the Metropolitan Museum in New York City. This was the first time Sérgio & Odair’s parents had ever performed on an international stage and they charmed us all. Their sister Badi has long been known for her remarkable vocal range and her unique song style, both live and on CD. Sérgio’s daughter Clarice is a budding composer, pianist and vocalist with several symphonic works to her name. And Carolina, Odair’s daughter, is a gorgeous vocalist with an innate feel for the rhythms of Brazil. With the passing of their father, Jorge, the Assads are touring as a quintet, exploring some of the most beautiful folk and pop music written by Brazil’s iconic composers, as well as music written by the Assads themselves. The program features their newest suite, Da Volta As Raises (Back to our Roots).

“There was never any doubt that the music would be world class in the Assad family concert Friday night…The flow of talent did not diminish with this third generation, each of whom displayed impressive potential: Clarice Assad’s mobile voice and compositional skills and Carolina Assad’s warm-toned vocalizing...The best aspect of the program was its remarkable sense of creative intimacy, of talented generations enjoying the rare opportunity to make music together.” Los Angeles Times
