“I have become fascinated with the hundreds of vintage photos I have seen where families, lovers, and even their dogs are posed in front of their cars; as if the car is a beloved part of the family,” said artist Gale S. McKee. “They are proud of this new member and want to show it off. This is my visual perception of how I imagine the past locales and the people in a romanticized way. I feel as if I have come to know them personally. A connection.”

McKee came across several vintage photos at an antique show in the fall of 2012. Inspired by the photos, she decided to manually transform the vintage photos and digitally print them onto raw-linen and then stretch onto large supports. The paintings are abstracted with layers of acrylic paint. McKee stresses that her work is NOT just colored photos, but actual paintings that she calls modern vintage photo-paintings.

With the sheer size of the image, McKee can imagine and create the life of people in the photos. Who are they? What were they doing the moment the photo was taken? What happened to them?

“When I process these images I realize how feelings of family pride have always been a constant emotion in human lives. The only difference here is time, and time flies faster than a green roadster!”
