Multi-instrumentalist, rapper, and producer Terrace Martin performed at the Wayne Shorter Celebration at the SFJAZZ Center in January and he returns to lead four exclusive nights with the supremely funky soul-jazz quartet Butcher Brown and special guests each night including trumpeter Nicholas Payton on Thursday, multi-instrumentalist and producer Taylor McFerrin joins Friday, another special guest for Saturday, and trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire on Sunday.
Martin is an integral part of the explosive South Central Los Angeles music scene that includes saxophonist Kamasi Washington, producer Steven “Flying Lotus” Ellison, and bassist Stephen “Thundercat” Bruner, and was one of the prime movers behind hip-hop superstar Kendrick Lamar’s multiple GRAMMY-winning 2015 album To Pimp a Butterfly. He has worked extensively as producer and performer with Snoop Dog, Dr. Dre, P. Diddy, and Lalah Hathaway, and released six full-length albums including 2017’s Sounds of Crenshaw Vol. 1 under the name The Pollyseeds. Most recently Martin has been part of Herbie Hancock’s working band, and performed two nights of January’s celebration of Wayne Shorter with Hancock, Kamasi Washington, Terence Blanchard, Danilo Pérez, John Patitucci, and Brian Blade. Equally inspired by Miles Davis and DJ Premier, Terrace Martin stands at the intersection of 20th century African-American musical innovations, pushing them boldly into the future.
