Tanniversary

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Happy birthday to the Tannery Arts Center! This summer solstice, the Tannery community kicks the doors open to their homes and studios with a daylong event of exhibitions, performances, curator's talk, dance workshops, and art demonstrations. All for FREE and all ages are welcome. 2014 marks a turning point in the Tannery project with as the staff and board of directors complete the fundraising for the 8-acre development project. Executive Director George Newell states:

"I am impressed with how the Tannery has developed. Taking an old leather factory and turning it into an art center was visionary. Each year it becomesmore amazing. With each new group of artists this place becomes more magical. We invite you to experience art, participate, and tour the historic Hide House which will soon become a performing arts theater."

Tanniversary is June 21, 3:00-midnight and will feature the artwork of over 65 artists working in glass, ceramics, painting, digital media, film, leather, literary arts, sculpture, photography, design, and children's mixed media. Camp Tannery Arts will lead a scavenger hunt for all ages to collect art and art-making objects throughout the campus. The Arts Council will announce the scholarship recipients of the California State Summer School for the Arts.

Three stages with performances by Diaspora Dance Company, Malima Salif Kone, Shamma Mama, Sweet Jam, Committee of Elders, Tan of Dreams, George Orwell Experience, Flor de Cana, Oumou Diamanka & MBor Faye, Shakti Bakti, Dance of Brazil, Zari Leon, Darrian O'Reilly, Bomba Santa Cruz, Mothersong, and DJ MLE Wax. All events will occur at the Tannery Arts Center at 1050 River Street in the Harvey West area.

Salz Tannery was in operation for 145 years and was developed into an art campus by the City of Santa Cruz, Artspace Inc, and the Tannery Arts Center. 100 units of affordable housing for artists and their families opened in 2009. In 2012, two historic buildings opened with 25,000 sq. feet dedicated to working studios. In 2013, the Arts Council Santa Cruz County moved their office into the Kron House. The historic Hide House is the last building to be renovated and will continue to be a cultural landmark. The Performing Arts Center will be a state-of-the-art attractive and affordable venue for drama, music, and dance. The Hide House Theater will have 200 fixed seats with up to 70 additional movable seats, with professional lighting and acoustics, and an open-air courtyard for community events and performances.
