Tanfis is Arabic for "catharsis," and signifies the journey of the Nafs (self/soul) from the holding of breath to a liberating exhalation. Tanfis II is a three-hour family-friendly concert experience weaving traditional and remixed music, acoustic and electronic sounds and images, deep listening and dance, storytelling and trance, and embroidery and video art into an immersive and deeply felt collective performance. Here, borders dissolve into a safe and inclusive space within which participants can remember a shared humanity; collectively grieve, laugh, sing, dance, listen, learn, and celebrate life.

The Tanfis ll experience offers a testament to the strength of those who have endured unimaginable suffering yet continue to rise with hope and dignity. Brought together through the RC residency platform, the Tanfis II tour follows the successful premiere in New York City earlier this year.

Remix - Culture Founder Hatim Belyamani explains the concept of remix culture and its relevance to his organization's mission, "Remix - Culture was born in 2012 out of my personal artistic journey. As a Moroccan-born musician living in the US, I had grown increasingly uncomfortable with the appropriation and "othering" I was seeing in the "ethnic" electronic music scene. I sought to develop a just method of marrying electronic and traditional music along with community-rooted storytelling. My goal was to start this journey in Palestine, but life took me back to my own country of Morocco. Over the years, as I took RC's work to many other communities across the world, I was always looking for an opportunity to bring this project back to its intended starting point of Palestine. In 2023, that opportunity finally arrived when we began the Tanfis II residency project, featuring more than a dozen artists from the Palestinian diasporas."

His inspiration for Tanfis II is deeply personal. "For those of us who have been paying attention to what's been going on in Palestine, we knew before October 7 that there have been grave injustices that the Palestinian people have been subjected to and suffering from and that there's incredible beauty and resilience in that land and those communities as well. This is an opportunity to really uplift stories that are underrepresented or misrepresented - and that's part of my mission for remix culture. We are creating a level playing field so there's more space for everyone at the table and we can really listen to each other, and everyone has a voice."

Hatim has had success with other Tanfis projects in New York City and received interest in bringing the experience to other American cities such as Chicago and multiple California cities including San Francisco where he has a personal connection. "I lived in the Bay Area for two years after college in 2002 and then I returned from 2006 to 2014. In a way, Remix - Culture was born in the Bay Area. While I was still based there, I traveled back and forth between the Bay and Morocco, taking the project to both places and ensuring they were in conversation with each other. So this is kind of like a homecoming for me personally to bring Remix - Culture back to California."

The tour aims to positively shift the cultural consciousness needed to break the cycle of fear and violence by uniting people and also to fundraise for critical emergency relief for Palestinians in Gaza/Palestine. Donations and a portion of the proceeds from the Tanfis II benefit tour will provide critical emergency relief for Gaza/Palestine through Rebuild Alliance who currently feed at least 80,000 Gazan citizens every day. Currently, there are an estimated 1.9 million (and counting) Palestinian people displaced and lacking access to housing, water, healthcare, food, and other basic human rights.
