ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN PANEL

Philip Wood, CITIZEN:Citizen

Philip Wood is best known for being the curatorial and creative brains behind the international design and art brand, CITIZEN:Citizen. He is also a speaker, professor and cultural critic whose views on products, design, craft and art have led him across the world, speaking about and engaging with those who see the potential for objects as vehicles for communication.

He is passionately involved in tracking their various locations in contemporary culture, whether it be through curating, gallery inversions (where visitors bring their own objects to the gallery), museum shows and, what he calls, rogue retail practices, which are as much cultural interventions as shopping events.

Products from Wood's company, CITIZEN:Citizen, are part of the permanent collections of both the New York and San Francisco MoMA. Originally trained in the traditions of English cabinet making, Wood's business career spans furniture design, production, retailing (both interiors and fashion) and now, curation and production of conceptual design objects.

He is principal and co-founder at Síol, an integrated design practice that was conceived to nurture the multidisciplinary mindset, unfold a greater awareness of spatial phenomena and be a conduit for a deeper connection between self and place.

His recent lecture series, ‘Building Consciousness’, investigated the merging disciplines of Architecture and Psychology. He presented the paper ‘Towards an Integral Architecture’ at the 2010 Integral Theory Conference. Kevin continues to take his conceptual thinking into mindful action through his practice. Before joining the Academy, Kevin had previously taught and guest lectured at the California College of the Arts.
