ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The 2013-2014 season marks Voci Women’s Vocal Ensemble’s 22st year— and the first under new artistic director, Anne Hege. Founded in 1991, Voci is recognized as one of the finest choral groups in the Bay Area. Voci champions music by women and for women. The group’s size of 20 voices conveys a poignant intimacy and allows for a deep, personal connection among chorus members and between chorus and audience. Voci’s commitment to musical excellence, unique mastery of style and technique, and adventurous and innovative programming have earned high praise from critics and choral musicians alike.

Voci’s new artistic director, Anne Hege, returns to her native Bay Area from Princeton University, where she will soon complete her PhD in Music Composition. Hege currently works as a vocalist, composer, improviser, and electronic musician, performing original works in her performance duo New Prosthetics, the laptop ensemble Sideband, and for the Carrie Ahern Dance Company. In 2000, she founded and directed the Albany Community Chorus, and she has led various sacred and secular vocal and performance ensembles in the SF Bay Area, Mexico City, New Jersey, and New York. Born in Oakland, Anne began her musical career singing with the Piedmont East Bay Children’s Choir and the Oakland Youth Chorus. Hege received a BA in music with honors from Wesleyan University in Connecticut and an MA in Music Composition from Mills College. For her doctoral research at Princeton, she developed a body-centered theory of musical and multimedia analysis.

Assistant Conductor Edna Huelsenbeck is the founder and former director of the Pacific Women’s Chorus in San Diego, and Concentus Women’s Chorus in Rochester, NY. She previously served as Interim Director for the University Section Club Chorus at U.C. Berkeley and the Interim Assistant Director of the San Diego Master Chorale. She received her Master of Music degree from The University of Texas at Austin, where she studied conducting with Morris Beachy and Craig Hella Johnson.

Pianist Kate Campbell, performs frequently as a soloist and chamber musician specializing in 20th and 21st century music. As the pianist in the new music ensemble REDSHIFT, she is artist in residence at California State University East Bay and the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival in Alaska. Other recent projects include performances with the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players and solo performances for the Switchboard Music Festival in San Francisco. Kate has been adjunct professor and staff accompanist at the University of San Francisco. She has taught piano and music theory at Westminster Conservatory of Music in Princeton, NJ, Crowden Center for Music in the Community in Berkeley, CA, and the San Francisco Community Music Center. She received her Master of Music in Piano Performance at University of Wisconsin-Madison, and her Bachelor of Music at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
