If you, like me, had stopped by Gray Area’s showcase of emerging new media artists last December, you would have run into a long, long line--for Susie Fu’s interactive “Self Portraits” installation. Once you got in, you would have immediately forgotten about your fellow art lovers waiting outside and contributed further to their plight:
Live, reactive paintings immediately surrounded you with a variety of lenses for self-observation. Each self-portrait invoked a different feeling and perspective and reflected the often peculiar and multi-faceted nature of your self-identity.
Alas, you would have discovered that the 45 seconds you were granted in the room that night didn’t allow you to revel in those feelings to your heart’s content.
To Susie, "Self Portraits" explores the disconnect between our internalized self-image, observations, voices and the faces we present to the outside world. Powered by deep learning algorithms, “Self Portraits” uses multiple cameras, GPUs and dozens of machine-generated mathematical models that have learned to mimic the style and artistic substance of existing artworks to re-draw the viewer’s self-portraits in real time.
For all of us who needed more time and anyone who wasn’t there, we’re excited to present a new iteration of “Self Portraits” for a whole Friday night (no time limits), adapted to the unique layout of the Pixel Cave.
Join us on Friday, August 17th, for "Self Portraits", chill beats and drinks, and a rooftop view of--most likely--the August fog rolling across downtown SF.
-- Nikolay
Eventbrite RSVP is required for admission and to get the venue's address on the day of the show.
Susie (@susiefu) is a new media artist based out of San Francisco (and soon, New York). Her current focus is on questioning and understanding perceptions of the self through immersive and AI-augmented experiences. Susie studied Computer Science at MIT.
