ArtSpan SF Open Studios at SFWA presents "Peeling Back the Layers" an exhibition by Susan R. Kirshenbaum
Kirshenbaum began reclaiming her life as a full-time visual artist just three years ago. "It's never too late to do what you really care about - and it's important for me to create lively, provocative art".
She is showing her most recent figurative collage series for the first time, presented as a limited edition of framed prints on paper. Using digital tools and drawing live models, she produces brisk, bold, gestural works of art that combine her photographs and painting to create richly layered collages.
Additional works by Kirshenbaum on paper, metal, and fabric are being shown in galleries around the Bay Area this fall including her 2016 life-sized series of silk scrolls, fluttering panels of strong, graceful female figures (Abrams Claghorn Gallery until 9/29 then Spark Arts through 10/31) and her 2017 series of monumental sheer female gestures called "banderas" hanging from the ceiling (Wessling Gallery through 9/30).
"Art is in my DNA." says Kirshenbaum, "I grew up in our family's art school in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I understand how unusually fortunate I am to have art so deeply ingrained in my nature. It's my center". Now she lives and works at her hilltop home in the heart of San Francisco, California.
Her third annual Open Studio Reception and Art Show will take place on Weekend 4, Nov. 3-4 at SFWA, in San Francisco's Inner Sunset. Kirshenbaum is an active volunteer and member of SFWA. Her work has been selected frequently to exhibit in their numerous juried shows.
