Reception: Saturday, June 20, 5:30-7:30
For exhibition 48 we are pleased to be previewing four representative photographs from Susan Mikula's new series, Picture Book. These works, large scale, framed pigment prints on Japanese Kozo paper, continue the tricks of scale of Mikula's previously exhibited u.X series, but with a shift in psychology. Whereas u.X used toy soldiers to suggest a latent militarism, Picture Book employs a repertoire placement of three elements, a toy house, a wooden rabbit and a doll figure, to explore the tethers of place, and a kind of coming of age as the protagonist ventures out into the world. Mikula is a master of narrative sub-texts, with her previous two cycles, American Bond and Thrill Show, providing a compassionate journal of the quandary of American masculinity. Shooting in soft focus with Polaroid film on an old SX-70 camera, Mikula balances in her imagery a historical poignancy with a contemporary pathos. Two GLG publications, Mikula's American Bond and u.X, are available during the run of the show. This is Mikula's 5th solo with the gallery.
