For decades, Sunspot Jonz has been on the cutting edge of hip-hop. His LA crew, Living Legends, have been leaders in the West Coast alternative rap sound since the '90s with their mixture of chill boom-bap beats, unusual samples (Brian Eno, Jefferson Starship) and fast paced back-and-forth group verses. His latest project, Skywalker, takes an entirely different route, into the realm of surreal electro-rap. As a solo artist he goes everywhere: old school hip-hop, new school hip-hop, whatever school hip-hop. He's the most abstract members of Living Legends, spitting out brilliant, obtuse references, rapping on and off the beat at will. His solo albums run the gamut beat-wise, but he ties it together with a smooth confident delivery. (Amulya Datla)
