Short Description: Build or refine your figure drawing skills through an anatomical approach to life drawing. This ten-session drawing intensive foregrounds the explosive potential of observation, as well as the surprising power of graphite, conté, and charcoal.
Through focused observation of live studio models, light, and shadow, students will establish or build upon their existing figure drawing foundations. This ten-week drawing intensive will highlight the body’s anatomy as a strategy for representing the figure grounded in realism. Featuring dry media including: graphite, conté and charcoal, in-class demonstrations will SHOW how to construct the body from mere line and tone through a range of mark making dynamics.
Current issues in contemporary figurative art will also be introduced in the form of a slide presentation. Through an engagement with observing, the body, materials, and with new perspectives, students will formulate or fortify an individual approach to the figure.

Daniel Samaniego’s hyper-detailed drawing installations are a meditation on queer persona. He received his BFA in Painting and Drawing in 2007 from the University of Nevada Las Vegas, and an MFA in Painting in 2011 from the San Francisco Art Institute. He has been an Artist in Residence at the Vermont Studio Center (2014).
Samaniego has shown his work in a solo and group context nationally in San Francisco, Las Vegas, Peoria (IL), and most recently in Los Angeles, as a part of the exhibition, Tight Ass: Labor Intensive Drawing and Realism, curated by Brett Reichman (CB1 Gallery, 2016). A solo exhibition of new drawings is forthcoming in Fall 2017 (San Francisco).

What materials (if any) will I need to bring to class?Each course requires specific materials that we ask you bring to your first class session so you can get started making right away. SFAI is located in a residential neighborhood, and free two-hour parking is available on all of the streets immediately surrounding the school.
