Join us for the debut of our new storytelling series, StoryNights. At StoryNights, talented performers, actors, comics and writers take to the mic for a night of personal stories told live. Sometimes touching, sometimes inspiring, sometimes embarrassing but always real; these stories won’t shy away from true grit.

Come watch StoryNights host, David Nihill (Found of FunnyBizz) and six first-rate storytellers perform 10 minute true stories. Tonight Nihill is joined by Don Reed, Doug Cordell, Kay DeMartini, Scott Sanders, and Neshama Franklin.

MEET THE STORYTELLERS

Don Reed
Don Reed (NPR’s Snap Judgment), a San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Nominee and NAACP Double Nominee for Best Actor & Best Playwright, has performed, written and directed for film, television and theater. His work on an HBO Robert Townsend Partners and Crime Special of up-and-coming comedians years ago caught the attention of some major Hollywood players and led to many recurring and guest starring roles on television. He has performed all over the country and opened for Tony Award winner Tommy Tune. You may have heard his voice on: Spiderman, Johnny Quest, Bob’s Burgers produced Huck, Etc, The Voice, Law & Order, Saturday Night Live or most recently on CBS 2 Broke Girls as Nancy the Cat giving birth. Reed has created promos for The Voice, The Golden Globes, The Academy Awards, MLB, Chappelle’s Show, Tyler Perry Films and the Olympics. Additionally, Don has written, directed, produced and starred in the HBO Shorts – Lucky: The Irish Pimp and Pookie Watson: Hood Detective. He has written and starred in work for Oprah Winfrey’s OWN and developed screenplays for Spike Lee’s 40 Acres and a Mule and Maverick Filmworks. Reed was the opening act/warm-up comedian for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno for over 1,000 episodes, as well as the most recent incarnation of The Arsenio Hall Show. He has feature film he penned at the funding stage with producers connected to “The Expendables” franchise and is launching a reality franchise this year through “2 Reediculous Enz Productions.” He is a board member of the thriving 51Oakland foundation keeping music and the arts alive in Oakland Public Schools.

Doug Cordell
Doug Cordell is a comedic storyteller and performer, NPR radio essayist and Emmy-nominated writer. His true-life radio stories air on NPR’s Snap Judgment, APM’s Marketplace and WLRN’s The Public Storyteller. He has been featured at theaters and clubs across the U.S. and abroad, and has ledworkshops on story, narrative and performance in New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Marrakesh, Morocco. A member of the Writers Guild of America with a Master of Fine Arts degree in Dramatic Writing from New York University, his television credits include PBS, Disney and Nickelodeon

David Nihill (host)
Leaving Dublin, Ireland, where he was born and raised until the age of 22, David got drunk on travel and never quite hit the sobriety of it. A bestselling author, David has been featured in Inc, NPR, Huffington Post, Forbes, Lifehacker and the Irish Times, and was recently part of the Irish Kings of Comedy Tour, SF Sketchfest, the Ventura Comedy Festival, Ukiah Comedy Alley, and the Kansas City Irish Festival. A multiple Moth Storyslam winner, Grandslam finalist and occasional host David has also told tales at Porchlight, The Naked Truth, Fireside and Litquake. Always a funny storyteller, these days he calls San Francisco home when immigration officials permit.

Kay DeMartini
Kay DeMartini is an NPR and Moth storyteller and comic. She is the producer of Busting Out Storytelling for the last seven years and the director of the Bay Area Unruly StoryFest. She’s from Minnesota where nice is a verb and toothpicks are a condiment.

Scott Sanders
Scott Sanders is an ex-actor / ex-New Yorker who moved to the left coast 15 years ago and is still wrestling with cross cultural challenges. Scott introduced graffiti / urban tagging to the Inner Mongolian territories. He’s participated in multiple Moth GrandSlams and told tales for NPR’s Snap Judgement, Fireside, Porchlight, BustingOut Storytelling, StorySlam Oakland and LitQuake. He’s proud to have told his stories at multiple Moth Mainstage events.

Neshama Franklin
Neshama Franklin lives in Bolinas, works at the Fairfax Library, and has been telling stories since she came to language. She is an omnivorous, eclectic reader and plays this out through a weekly blog, a local TV show hosting Marin poets (both on the Marin County Free Library website), and a local radio show in which she reads what she loves. She’s a multiple Moth story slam winner, Grand Slam Finalist and NPR featured storyteller.
