Joshua Redman tenor saxophone
Ron Miles trumpet
Scott Colley bass
Brian Blade drums

While Joshua Redman has never shied away from his patrimony, he’s never pursued it either. That is, until forming Still Dreaming. A project that epitomizes the theme of “Traditions in Transition,” Still Dreaming draws inspiration from Old and New Dreams, the iconic 1980s band featuring Redman’s father, saxophone great Dewey Redman, and fellow definitive Coleman collaborators Ed Blackwell, Charlie Haden, and Don Cherry. Redman assembled this band to pay tribute to his late father, with bassist Scott Colley (a student of Haden), Cherry disciple Ron Miles on trumpet and drummer Brian Blade, born to the same proud New Orleans tradition as Blackwell. Redman broke into the jazz scene in the early 1990s performing widely with his father, recording two albums with him. But as a bandleader in his own right, he’s followed his own trajectory, rarely intersecting with the gut-bucket avant-garde sound that defined Dewey’s aesthetic. Over the course of four albums for ECM and Black Saint, O&ND played brilliantly reimagined versions of Ornette’s hurly burly compositions and originals (including the Dewey Redman tune that gave the band its name). Still Dreaming boldly expands on this essential legacy, creating mesmerizing music for a new century.
