"Still" by Tripp Baird: Opening Reception

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Four Barrel Coffee and The Mill are pleased to present "Still" by Tripp Baird. With a background in painting and mixed media, Tripp brings a series of photographs that fulfill his artistic hunger not with paint or drawing tools but in found moments. Landscapes in relative isolation, with rarely a human figure to be seen, cities from above, and stoic skylines dominate the imagery, often captured in blurred and impressionistic strokes. The painterly foundation of Tripp’s work is evident in his compositions, and it’s clear why he thinks of these works as paintings executed with a camera.

Beyond his background in painting, Tripp’s series is also informed by his interest in the psychology of seeing and of memory. He remains fascinated by the interaction of experience/memory with the journey through art and its objects. Tripp’s personal art evolution through different mediums echoes the experiences shared by any art viewer or maker. Where we are now- how we see now- is dependant on or at least influenced by what we have seen, made, or interpreted in the past. Tripp has been a practicing Buddhist for most of his adult life, and these decades of searching for silence and stillness are an important contextual backdrop for the work of "Still." Ideas regarding the preciousness and impermanence of the everyday, change and movement as the only constants, and the wisdom to be found in the space between breaths have taught Tripp about both life and art.

Born in Boston, MA, Tripp Baird has been producing and selling paintings and photographs for two decades. Tripp received an AB in Psychology and an AB in Visual and Environmental Studies from Harvard University and completed a published thesis there on the interaction of memory with the experience of art. He has previously shown his work in exhibitions in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Colorado, California, New York, and Montreal, Quebec. He lives and works in San Francisco with his better half Shana and their two sons Cillian and Ewen.

"Still" runs from March 14th through May 7th at The Mill in San Francisco. Join us on Thursday March 14th from 6-9pm for the opening reception, which is a part of the March Divisadero Art Walk. Drinks will be served and the artist will be in attendance.

The Mill is a cafe and bakery that has been supporting artists with exhibitions since 2013. This exhibition is free and open to the public. The Mill is located at 736 Divisadero St., and is open from 7am until 9pm every day. Contact [email protected] and visit themillsf.com.
