Autistry Studios helps teens and adults with Autism, Asperger’s and other learning differences become successfully independent by leveraging their interests and talents while creating a community.
Autistry was founded in 2008 by parents Janet Lawson and Daniel Swearingen. Looking ahead for their son Ian, a young man with autism and what his life would be like after high school, they were very unhappy with the lack of appropriate services, work choices, and living situations available for people like their son. They started working to fill this gap in services.
Autistry Studios has evolved into a therapeutic Maker Space where students learn skills in the context of projects they choose. Projects range from model building to video production, painting and drawing to costume making, electronics to game design. Autistry strives to facilitate whatever the student is interested in. In this context they support positive social skills and habits. They help students attend school and college, find work, find housing, take care of themselves, and plan for the future. Autistry builds independence.
Autistry offers workshops for individuals ages 13 and up and is located in San Rafael. A new location is planned for the SF peninsula.
