Creativity Explored artists investigate individual letters and alphabets as art objects in their own right

Creativity Explored draws on the history of typography and calligraphy to investigate individual letters and the alphabet as art objects in their own right, in a new exhibition titled, StereoTYPE, curated by Studio Manager and Visual Arts Instructor E. Francis Kohler. In using the title StereoTYPE, Kohler has added his signature mark of social commentary: alphabet-themed signage with text dispelling historically-held stereotypes about people with disabilities, such as “A is for Autism” and “Z is for Zellweger Syndrome.” The work included in the exhibition by Creativity Explored artists are studies of symbols and graphics found in everyday written languages, including type, script, calligraphy, and contemporary graffiti.
Selected works in the exhibit include, Joe Yuen’s H, 2013, depicting the letter as though it is an architectural feature in a landscape. In contrast, Makeya Kaiser’s Diva Letter B, 2014, is a chunky stuffed-felt sculpture of the glyph “B,” with colorful stitching that is decorative as well as functional, perched atop a robin’s egg blue cube – like an old-fashioned alphabet block, reconfigured.
In conjunction with StereoTYPE, Creativity Explored has partnered with PSY/OPS Type Foundry to build fonts derived from the work of three Creativity Explored artists: Laron Bickerstaff, Gabriel Maduena, and Noel Ortega. The fonts will be available for distribution beginning October 9. In addition, Rod Cavazos of (The) Alphabetic Order will host Doodlefest, an interactive font-building and drawing workshop at Creativity Explored on Saturday, November 15, from 1 PM – 4 PM, that will be free to the public
