In 2013, the National Steinbeck Center invites people from around the world to our home for the 33rd Annual Steinbeck Festival for a glimpse into the unique place that so inspired John Steinbeck. The theme for this year is ‘Home.’
The 33rd Annual Steinbeck Festival is ‘Old Home Week’ for Steinbeck lovers from across the world and down the street. John Steinbeck was born, raised and buried in the town of Salinas, California that is now home to the National Steinbeck Center. This home was a constant inspiration to him throughout his career as a writer and was the setting for many of his books and short stories.
This is a great opportunity for all to celebrate the communities of Salinas and beyond. The 2013 Steinbeck Festival will be May 3 -5, 2013 and will include the following highlights:
• Friday, May 3, 4-7PM: Play in the Pastures of Heaven: Opening Night Reception. Join the National Steinbeck Center and the Big Sur Land Trust at historic Mark’s Ranch in the Pastures of Heaven to celebrate Steinbeck’s legacy. The evening will feature a talk by Octavio Solis, creator of the play of Steinbeck’s Pastures of Heaven; BBQ; live music; and general carousing and merriment.
• Saturday, May 4, 9AM-12PM: Talks about Steinbeck, his homes, life and loves. Featuring renowned Steinbeck scholar Susan Shillinglaw; Professor of American Literature, Gavin Cologne-Brookes from Bath Spa University, England; and an intimate virtual tour of Steinbeck’s Sag Harbor home.
• Saturday, May 4, 6-8PM: Books, Beer & Bubbly by the Bay: VIP Reception in Cannery Row. Featuring a private sunset tour of Ricketts’ Lab; heavy appetizers and Steinbeck-themed cocktails at the Clement; and a sneak-peek of the National Steinbeck Center’s soon-to-be opened Cannery Row location.
