Stanley Clarke has been an influential bassist ever since playing in Chick Corea's jazz-rock fusion group Return to Forever. Over more than 40 years since, he has focused mainly on rock, funk and film scores, playing jazz only occasionally. Now Clarke is once again planting his feet firmly on jazz ground alongside the acclaimed young pianist Hiromi Uehara. While both musicians have interests that lie beyond jazz, they aren't a fusion group. Instead, they are a straight-ahead duo, restrained yet energetic, playing originals and standards with equal skill. - Sean Conwell

"Stanley Clarke is an icon who has revolutionized bass playing. He opened up my brain to an electric form of jazz while I was in school." - Terence Blanchard
ABOUT THIS SHOW
Bassist, composer, and 2022 NEA Jazz Master Stanley Clarke is a peerless innovator and a five-time GRAMMY winner who brought new prominence to the electric bass in jazz and was a primary developer of jazz fusion as a founding member of the iconic band Return to Forever with the late Chick Corea. He returns to open the 2024-25 Season in duet with piano virtuoso Hiromi.
After the triumph of his 2010 debut Water and follow-up Be Good, Porter broke through to mainstream stardom with his Blue Note debut Liquid Spirit, winning the 2013 GRAMMY for Best Jazz Vocal Album. He repeated the GRAMMY and chart success of Liquid Spirit with 2016's Take Me to the Alley and has released a string of highly personal projects including 2017's Nat "King" Cole & Me, 2020's All Rise, and his most recent session, 2023's Christmas Wish, offering Porter's inimitable takes on beloved holiday classics.
Raised in the hardscrabble city of Bakersfield, the budding vocalist grew up with seven siblings who all sang and worked in their mother's skid row mission. Growing up around rollicking tent revivals offered ideal training for his future career as a master musical storyteller. Porter brings the same soul-stirring authority to jazz settings, revealing powerful truths with heart and grace. Don't miss this season highlight performance.
