This course is designed for students who have already begun an independent project or who are in the midst of developing a project. Independent assignments will be given based on in class material while together we’ll explore how to further your already existing project. With an emphasis on making, discussion, and critique, we’ll explore each person’s unique vision and perspective while exploring how we can arrive with new photographic work. From the outset, we will be making images and prints during class and becoming immersed in how we can each continue to expand our photographic sensibilities through new ways of making, lively discussions, sharing and lecture. You will walk away with ideas for photographs that will inform future bodies of work as well as with new ways to consider your practice.
____Daniel Melo is a latinx artist and musician living in San Francisco. Melo earned an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and a BA in English Literature from Kenyon College. Upon completion of the MFA, he received the 2015 New Genres Outstanding Graduate Student Award at the San Francisco Art Institute returning shortly thereafter to Buenos Aires to participate in a residency and two exhibitions. Melo has shown in New York, San Francisco’s SF Camerawork and at the University of San Francisco, and Buenos Aires spaces Mite and Big Sur. Currently, he’s editing a series of essays on Venezuelan immigration into Colombia written by the assistant attorney general of Colombia in Bogotá. Melo is in his third year as an artist at the Headlands Center for the Arts in Marin County, California.
