COLOR THEORY + SYMBOLISM FOR PHOTOGRAPHY Victoria Mara Heilweil4 sessions >> Wednesdays, April 4–256:30-9:30 pm, McMillan Conference Room, $195No prerequisite. Students may use any camera in this class, even an iPhone.
Color is a complicated topic, and it takes focused study and experimentation to understand it. Though we see in color, it is easy to take it for granted in a representational medium such as photography. This course trains you to see color, and use it creatively in your photographs. Class time will include discussions and lecture on color theory, and primarily devoted to shooting photographs and receiving feedback on your work. In addition, there will be some discussion of adjusting color using Photoshop and Lightroom to further enhance your photographs. Presentations of historical and contemporary color photographers will illustrate concepts each week, and inspire student photographs. You will walk away with greater knowledge about the power of color and how to harness it to your benefit.
____Victoria Mara Heilweil is a nationally exhibited photographic artist, curator, and educator. Her photography transforms the mundane into the sublime. She received her MFA from California College of the Arts in 1995. Her work has been included in exhibitions at the San Jose Institute for Contemporary Art, Intersection for the Arts, Southern Exposure, RayKo Photo Center, Pro Arts and PHOTO Gallery in the Bay Area; wall space gallery and Robert V. Fullerton Art Museum in Southern California; University Art Gallery at California State University, Chico; Minneapolis Photo Center; Visual Arts Center in Portsmouth, Virginia; and Washington Square Art Galleries in New York City. She has also created public and community-based artworks in conjunction with the ZERO1 Biennial in San Jose and the Bayview Opera House in San Francisco. Heilweil was selected as an Artist in Residence at the de Young Museum in 2015.

For courses that meet for ten sessions or more, a 100% refund minus a $20 processing fee is given if written notice is received at least five business days before the first class. After five business days before the first class, an 80% refund minus a $20 processing fee is given when written notice is received prior to the third class. No refund is given after the class has met three times. Please allow two to three weeks to receive your refund.
For courses that meet for six sessions or fewer, a 100% refund minus a $20 processing fee is given when written notice is received at least five business days before the first class. After five business days before the first class, an 80% refund minus a $20 processing fee is given when written notice is received prior to the second class. What materials (if any) will I need to bring to class?Each course requires specific materials that we ask you bring to your first class session so you can get started making right away. SFAI is located in a residential neighborhood, and free two-hour parking is available on all of the streets immediately surrounding the school. The two-hour restriction cuts off at 9pm, so evening Public Education students do not need to move their car, unless you arrive prior to 7pm.SFAI is easily accessible via public transportation, with Muni bus lines #30 Stockton, and #47 Van Ness located within a few blocks of campus.I have a question that isn't on this list.
